Nicholas Schubring Saputra (born February 24, 1984) is an Indonesian actor, model and television personality of German-Javanese descent. He is known for his role as Rangga in the 2002 cult classic romance Ada Apa dengan Cinta?, a role he reprised in Ada Apa dengan Cinta? 2.[1][2][3]


He won Best Leading Role Actor in Indonesian Movie Awards for his role in Janji Joni (2005) and Citra Award for Best Leading Actor in 2005 Indonesian Film Festival for his role in Gie (2005).[2][3]


Saputra is also known as a dedicated environmentalist.[4][5][6]

Early life and education


Saputra was born to a German father and an Indonesian mother. After graduating from SMA Negeri 8 Jakarta, Saputra continued his study in University of Indonesia. He holds a degree in architecture from University of Indonesia.[2][7]



Career


Saputra started his career in fashion industry as run-way model.


In 2002, he made his film debut in the romantic teen drama film Ada Apa dengan Cinta? opposite actress Dian Sastrowardoyo.[8] For his performance in the film, Saputra earned his first nomination in Indonesian Film Festival for Best Leading Actor. In 2005, he starred as the activist Soe Hok Gie in the biographical film Gie.[9] He won Best Leading Role Actor in Indonesian Movie Awards and many other films awards. Saputra made television appearances on Channel V Asia, hosting such segments as The Ticket and Screentime (2007).[10] Later in 2011, Saputra became a sportcaster for Malaysian TV station TV3.


In Pendekar Tongkat Emas, he played the mysterious warrior, Elang, a role that also involved heavily choreographed fight sequences.[11][12] In 2015, he starred in a web series Nic and Mar with Mariana Renata.[13] This is the second collaboration between him and Renata, who previously co-starred in Janji Joni. The series filmed in France and Czechoslovakia.[14]


In 2016, Saputra reprised the role of Rangga in Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? 2.[15] The film received positive reviews and was highly successful at the box office, becoming the third highest-grossing film of all time in Indonesia. He also has a role in the fantasy thriller film Interchange, which debuted at the Locarno International Film Festival[16] and the Toronto International Film Festival[17] on the same year.


He co-produced an EU documentary on elephant conservation Save Our Forest Giants (2016) with filmmaker Amanda Marahimin.[18][19][20]
